Lot 353 British Brown Bess Contract Musket.
Marked Goff with 1779 date and rear of lock and East India Company heart at rear. 39" bbl in 75 cal with brass mounts and what appears to be an American conversion to percussion D. G. and British proofs on left side of bbl. Metal surfaces are fair to good with well defined markings and light to moderate pitting with some heavier pitting at firing areas from use. The stock has been refinished with some fill and replacement of wood (fair only) with some losses in forend. The ramrod is missing. Action works well. The E.I.C. musket was adopted by the board of ordinance in 1797 but private contractors like this example are known to have been used in the revolutionary war somewhat earlier. Just such an E.I.C. musket turned up in Florida recently with documented revolutionary war history and confederate descent.
